I. There is a problem in society today. That problem is:
The act of driving drunk does not have strong or strict enough consequences because people continue to do it. There are many people who are repeat offenders too. This means that they are not learning from the penalties associated with drunk driving and they need to become more strict. This will protect more people from being injured by the act, or even potentially being killed. It is a huge offense and should be treated as one.
II. Facts that demonstrate that there is a problem are:

According to, "Tougher DUI Penalties Urged ; Study Looks at Dangers on US Roads," 20% of crashes are caused by a person who does not have a valid license. Some of these people have their license suspended due to a DUI. The continuation of driving after a license has been suspended has rose and people get away with is two or three times before they are officially arrested and taken in. Just taking away a license is not doing it for DUI penalties. Delray Beach police officer Vinnie Gray, "[estimates] that 40% of the people he arrests have prior DUI convictions." It also claims that a better job needs to be done to identify the problem drinkings to prevent more driving under the influence. If problem drinkers are targeted in arrests for DUIs and penalized with stronger, stricters consequences, less people will drive drunk and or repeat the offense. Yoli Buss explains, "these people are ticketed again and again." It is obvious the penalties now are not preventing cases of driving under the influence. Therefore, they need to be strengthened and become more strict. Then in the article "Judge sizzles over DUI penalties Way too Lenient, Nadel Contends," Nadel urges lawmakers to make stricter DUI laws. He says a man was arrested in put in jail on a count of felony because driving under the influence. He continued to try to reduce his sentence, which had already been reduced by four months of the maximum penalty now. He was sentenced to fourteen months in jail, and had only served four of them. This is a problem because it took him recieving eleven DUIs before being sentenced. Not only had he been convicted of the DUIs, but driving with his license suspended due to them along with other traffic violations. He could have easily killed someone one of thos eleven times. Nadel suggests, " the drunk-driving laws are [not] taken seriously." That is a huge problem because driving under the influence can hurt someone and potentially kill them. It is extremely dangerous! A man accused with proof of a repeat offense eleven times should be in jail for longer then 14 months.
